Playing with Sequins

This Christmas I had fun with sequins...I was inspired by my friend Dana T. She was recreating a Christmas swag like the one her Grandmother had made. Her Grandmother had cut out white felt letters to spell out Christmas and be-decked and be-jeweled them with sequins and beads. Then backed it with red felt to hide stitching and sewed each letter onto a wide red velvet ribbon, talk about cute! It was so festive and fun I had to try my hand at it.

However, I gave it a twist and did ornaments for my kids for their ornament boxes. We give each of our children an ornament every year until they graduate from college or marry. That way they have all their ornaments to fill their first Christmas tree once they are on their own. I love this tradition, it is practical and the kids really love thinking back to each Christmas represented by an ornament.

So here are my charming little birds. I used Layer of Color's Touch of Elegance stamp and fabric ink to stamp down the background pattern. Then I went to town with colorful beads and sequins. They are stuffed just a little to give that quilted look. I stitched on wings and then strung them to hang.

When I was a girl and we started pulling out Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations I remember singing this little childhood rhyme. I can remember such excitement filled the air. There was something special about the holidays! I don't know exactly where this little jingle comes from I imagine it to be Old English...anyway, I feel the holidays coming don't you?

The smell of wood burning in the hearth, the changing of leaves and the temperature, pulling out warm sweaters, mittens, scarves, hats and cozy slippers. Soon we will be preparing for our Thanksgiving Feast and start ramping up our efforts to get Christmas gifts done. In a effort to practice what I preach I have come up with some wonderful crafting projects for the holidays this year, so you and your favorite girl can get to crafting special gifts too! I am so excited I am bursting at the seams!

One of my Favorite Treasures-Books!

Books are one of my favorite things, aren't you thankful that you were given the gift of literacy? Another treasured kind of book is an altered book, they fascinate me! I have always had within me the spirit of exploration. As a girl I loved to wander the forests of my girlhood home and find special places just for me. Altered books fill this requirement for my soul. I love all the pockets and tags and flaps. They just beckon to me to explore and find the treasure within it's cover. I think I would have been a great pirate!

If you don't know by now, one of my dearest friends is our LOC challenge hostess Laura. Our first artistic project together was an altered book for each other. We used the letters of our names to guide our pages. This is an example of what Laura gave me.

Incidentally, she made this for me and gave it to me for my 40th birthday. What a gift, it still makes me tear up to think about opening this package I got in the mail. No one had ever made something so special for me, ever! A true treasure, just like our friendship! I know this isn't my art work but Laura's(I got permission to post this way) however, I thought it only fair to show her book since she used mine for the challenge inspiration!

So I guess in a round about way you eventually see my work and hers, just not in the conventional way-which is just how we like it!

So naturally, I left a comment and sure enough I won! What is so great is what I won. A gift basket sampling of some of her products. I couldn't believe it when it came, it was like getting a Christmas gift in the mail. It came packaged beautifully in a sweet little tin bucket with clear cellophane and a lovely ribbon too. I was so excited that I torn into it before I took any pictures but I am sure you can use your imagination. Here is what I got:

Herbs!

Summer is in full swing here in the Pacific Northwest- finally! Now, all of the sudden, my garden has taken off and I am harvesting my herbs, YES! already-isn't that crazy?! I was afraid they would all flower before I got the chance. So, my daughter and I bundled up Parsley, Sage, Oregano and Thyme... sounds like a song I know- Simon and Garfunkel anyone?! My husband started singing and changing the words to tease us last night while we sat on the porch swing and readied the green bundles to hang for drying.

I thought we would dry them and make Christmas gifts this year. Some sort of herb blend bundled in homemade calico pouches. Doesn't that sound homey and wonderful? I might try my hand and making an herbal tea too. Blending Lemon Balm, Chamomile, and Lavender.

There really is nothing like partaking in the harvest and bounty the Lord has blessed us with. It gives me good feelings to know I have worked with my hands, tilled the soil, planted, harvested and enjoyed the bounty. It also tastes the best too!

Thank you sweet Lord for blessing me with creativity to use what you have given to glorify You and bless those around me. My desire is to be a good steward of your goodness to us! Amen

Birthdays Abound!

Well, as many of you have been reading I have vowed this year to give gifts that I have made so I thought that I would showcase some of the things I have been doing since it has been a birthday bonanza around here starting with my daughters friends, sons friends, then daughter's, then son's, then husbands, then other daughter... Phew anyone dizzy yet?

This is a piece of art I did for my Husband for his birhtday. My husband is the strength of our family, like the old oak tree.

My daughter and I made this for her friend's birthday-isn't it so cute! We used an old hot chocolate tin, cleaned it out and made a little sewing tote out of it. Using paper, lace, craft peals, material, fiber fill, silk flowers and then we made the lid into a pincusion and stuffed the inside full of sewing goodies and fat quarters-she loved it.
